When the Chicago Bulls traded for Nikola Vucevic two years ago, the move ended their rebuild and signaled a change in strategy. They cemented that transition by signing DeMar DeRozan, Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso.
They were no longer a rebuilding team. They pushing for the playoffs.
Unfortunately, Ball went down with a knee injury 35 games into his Bulls tenure, and he has not returned. Now, it looks like he may never be back on the court. In turn, Chicago needs to figure out their point guard position because it is by far their weakest spot in the starting five.
According to KC Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago, one of the only ways the Bulls can improve next season is if Coby White takes a leap forward and answers their problems at the one.
“With Ball possibly missing another full season and his career in jeopardy, re-signing White and having him handle starting point guard duties could have multiple positive effects on the roster,” Johnson wrote.
Johnson also noted that White’s role at the point guard spot could help the Bulls increase their 3-point volume.
“White has improved his ballhandling and decision-making while still possessing the ability to finish at the rim,” Johnson wrote. “He also grew defensively last season.
“The Bulls absolutely must increase their 3-point attempts next season. Keeping White, and keeping him on the court more, will help.”
If the Bulls want to be a playoff team next year, they need to upgrade their point guard position, and White could be the answer.
