The Seahawks used a pair of draft picks on cornerbacks this year, igniting hope that this position may finally be turning around after several seasons of dysfunction following Richard Sherman’s exit.
By the looks of things, fifth-round pick Tariq Woolen is taking advantage of his opportunities. Woolen got to play with the first-team defense during Saturday’s mock game thanks to an injury for Sidney Jones. Woolen acquitted himself well and might be in the mix for serious playing time this season. Fans shouldn’t forget about fourth-round selection Coby Bryant, though. Doug Farrar at Touchdown Wire named Bryant’s cold-blooded low passer rating allowed in college as one stat that matters for Seattle.
“Bryant was in Sauce Gardner’s shadow, but he was more than a sidekick — last season, he allowed just 33 catches on 75 targets for 460 yards, 178 yards after the catch, three touchdowns, three interceptions, and an opponent passer rating of 61.0.”
Bryant has been working behind Sidney Jones at left cornerback throughout training camp.
Justin Coleman’s primacy in the slot is set in stone, but as of yet the outside corner spots have not been settled. In an ideal world, Bryant and Woolen will be starting at those two spots by Week 18 – getting as much experience as possible in 2022.
