Nottinghamshire Live readers have given their thoughts on the reason why a cob is called a cob. Two suggestions were repeatedly put forward after Nottingham sandwich shops were undecided on a clear reason.
One proposed reason suggested by readers was the same as Andy Hutchings, who runs the Crusty Cob Shop, in Castle Boulevard, Lenton. His theory was that when baked as a batch, the bread item looked like cobbles.
"I was told by a Baker that it was because it resembled the cobbled roads," commented Sue Dodson Green on Facebook. Dee Underwood agreed, saying: "I always thought it was because of COBbles, when they are cooked in batches, they look like a cobbled road."
