Coastguard airlifts woman from Isle of Harris cliff after hiking injury

A Scots woman was airlifted to safety in a daring rescue effort involving the coastguard, mountain rescue and the police.

HM Coastguard were alerted to the situation last night at around 7:30pm after a woman fell whilst hillwalking on the Isle of Harris.

The woman was walking along Sron Ulladale, the largest overhanging cliff in the UK, when the accident happened. Due to the remote location the coastguard helicopter was called in to lift her to safety.

The woman was located above Ulladale Cave by the rescue staff. She is believed to have an ankle injury and was then transported to Stornaway Airport and onto Western Isles Hospital.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard Western Isles Skye and Lochaber said: "At around 7.30pm yesterday HM Coastguard was called after a woman dislocated her ankle on Sron Ulladale, Isle of Harris.

"Harris, Stornoway and Ness coastguard rescue teams were sent along with Hebrides Mountain Rescue Team, the Scottish Ambulance and the coastguard helicopter from Inverness.

"The helicopter flew her to Stornoway airport and into the care of the ambulance service"

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers were called to a report an injured walker above the Ulladale Cave, Amhuinnsuidhe, Isle of Harris around 7.05pm on Wednesday, 13 July, 2022.

“Police, along with HM Coastguard and Scottish Ambulance Service, located the injured walker and she was airlifted to Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway for treatment."
