Coastal Texas resident Michael Kubecka shared his experience of being caught off guard by the unexpected severity of flooding caused by Tropical Storm Alberto. The storm resulted in his downstairs bedroom being filled with approximately a foot of water on Wednesday evening.
As a 37-year-old fishing guide residing in Matagorda, Texas year-round, Kubecka expressed his surprise at the extent of the flooding. He mentioned that while they are accustomed to high water levels in the area, this particular storm did not initially appear to pose a significant threat. Many residents, including Kubecka, did not take extensive precautions due to the storm's projected path towards Mexico.
Reflecting on the situation, Kubecka acknowledged the oversight in underestimating the storm's impact. He mentioned leaving items in his yard, resulting in damage to his washer, dryer, and other belongings in the downstairs area of his home.
On Wednesday evening around 8 p.m., Kubecka ventured through Egret Island in Matagorda County to assess the aftermath of the storm. He described the scene as 'crazy,' indicating the extent of the damage caused by the flooding.
