The Irish Coast Guard is urging members of the public to take care if out swimming as "freezing" temperatures continue with more wintry showers are on the way.
It comes as Met Eireann have issued three weather warnings for Dublin as the cold snap is set to last until at least Wednesday next week, with freezing fog, snow and ice warnings in effect until midday on Sunday. According to forecasters, the recent cold spell is due to an "Artic arimass" coming into Ireland's airspace.
Taking to social media, the Irish Coast Guard gave an important message to swimmers for the next few days. They said: "As winter has hit us this week, please take care swimming or venturing onto our waters. It’s cold outside and freezing in the water, be prepared and don’t take risks.

"Whether your a seasoned swimmer or not, don’t take risks, swim in a sheltered bathing area, don’t swim alone or at night. Remember if you see anyone in difficulty in or near the water, dial 112/999 or VHF channel 16 immediately and ask for the Coast Guard," they added.
Meanwhile, hail, sleet and snow are forecast for costal counties until Wednesday. The freezing fog is also expected to linger for the next couple of days.
Earlier this week Water Safety Ireland also urged members of the public to be aware of the dangers of freezing water as temperatures remain low.
They said: "A cold week ahead with hazardous icy conditions on the way. Remember to carefully consider the dangers of cold water swimming to avoid cold shock or hypothermia."
