Coalition MP Gets Flamed For Comments On Gender Equality: ‘Women Don’t Want To Be CEOs’

Member of the Liberal National Party Colin Boyce has been criticised by the Minister for Women over comments he recently made in regard to the gender pay gap. Katy Gallagher has slammed the comments as “tone deaf, casual misogyny”.

Representative for the Queensland electorate of Flynn, Colin Boyce, spoke in Parliament last week during a debate on the gender pay divide and gender equity.

While speaking to other members in the House, Boyce criticised legislation setting gender equity targets for large companies by saying he believed the policy would not actually benefit women.

Though he opened by highlighting his support for women and men being paid equally, he then continued to say that the issue was “not comparing apples with apples”.

“Many women don’t want to be CEOs of companies or take leadership roles,” Colin Boyce said, per the ABC.

“You cannot possibly compare women who are working in the childcare sector, as an example, to men who work in the construction industry… It’s simply not the same thing.”

Boyce later highlighted that the “apples” not being compared were the employment industries, not genders.

Minister for Women slams Boyce’s comments

Following his comments, Colin Boyce copped heat from female MPs across the bench who slammed his “backward attitudes” towards gender.

Of those calling out the Queensland MP, Labor’s Minister for Women Katy Gallagher publicly condemned the male MP.

“This kind of tone-deaf, casual misogyny has no place in our community, let alone the parliament,” Gallagher stated.

“If you need any more evidence of why Peter Dutton‘s Coalition hasn’t changed one bit when it comes to respecting women, look no further than these outdated comments.”

Boyce has defended the comments to the ABC and reinforced his support for equal pay, but explained that his goal was to make a point about how different industries impact the gender pay gap.

“What my speech highlighted was the fact that various reports commissioned to determine the gender pay gap compare completely different industries that are not related which is not comparing apples with apples.”

It was reported on November 19 that due to the gender pay gap, women in Australia would effectively be working for free for the rest of the year.
