Coalisland community stunned after sudden death of supermarket worker

Tributes have been paid to a man in his 20s who died after becoming unwell while working at a local supermarket in Co Tyrone.

Michael Morgan, 23, was an employee of Newell Stores in Coalisland where he had been working on Monday morning. He is believed to have become unwell while working in the shop and sadly died a short time later.

The emergency services were called to the scene at around 8.30am on Monday morning, with two ambulance crews taking one patient to Craigavon Area Hospital.

The supermarket at the Lineside in the town was closed on Monday morning in response to the incident. Local GAA club Edendork GAC said they were 'shocked and saddened' to hear of Michael's death on Monday.

"Edendork GAC is shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden passing of young Michael Morgan who died suddenly this morning," the club said. "Michael was the much-loved son of late Yvonne Fox, Patrick Morgan, brother of Liam, Cathy, Fionnula, Shannon, Martin and Ciara and Grandson of Brian and Margaret Fox (Creenagh)."

Local representatives for the Coalisland area offered condolences to Michael’s family following his passing.

“It’s desperately sad news and the whole community is thinking of the family at this time,” Sinn Féin MLA Linda Dillon said. “Our thoughts are with the family and the staff at Newell Stores as it will have been a big shock to them.”

SDLP councillor Malachy Quinn said: “It’s another tragedy in the local area and a lot of people are very shocked at what happened today. My sympathies are with the family at this time.”

Independent councillor Dan Kerr said: “I’d like to express my condolences to Michael’s family and friends. It’s very sad circumstances for Michael to lose his life, he had his whole life ahead of him.”

Funeral details for the Coalisland man are yet to be announced.
