The market for vintage items is booming, and pre-loved designer handbags have become as much a status symbol among the TikTok generation as anything box fresh.
For those prepared to trawl the internet, the likes of DePop and Vestiare Collective offer many a gem. However, for those that prefer an IRL shopping experience, it can be tricky to find authentic designer bags in excellent condition in London’s charity and vintage stores.
Coach might just be about to change that, as today the US label opens its first concept store in the capital, “Tomorrow’s Vintage”.
The pop-up shop in Spitalfields Market will sell vintage Coach products, some that have been restored and upcycled, and some that have been remade and reworked entirely. It’s a smart move given the popularity of vintage Coach bags – and particularly the baguette and C monogrammed styles of the Y2K era – on TikTok, where the “vintage coach bag” tag has 6.6 million views.
Decked out in upcycled and vintage furniture, the store will display renowned bags from the archives, including vintage styles from the iconic Bonnie Cashin-era such as the Dinky, the Saddle and the Cashin Carry.
The Coach Craftsmanship Bar will be the place to go for leather care to extend the life of your Coach bag. It will offer monogramming services and customisation options with pins and vintage patches. Local artists will also be on hand to personalise leather goods with embroidery.
A schedule of planned in-store events includes leather and personalisation workshops with artists. There will also be panel discussions on vintage fashion, circularity, thrifting and upcycling - see the full calendar here.
From November 1, the store will also allow customers to trade in their old Coach bag through Coach (Re)Loved Exchange, to be recycled or reimagined in exchange for store credit. This is the first time the service has been available in the UK and Europe.
Coach’s Tomorrow’s Vintage concept store is open from today until January 16 at 4 Market Street, 10am to 6pm Sunday to Friday and 9am to 6pm on Saturday.
