Coach makes surprising admission about Chris Hughton's disastrous Nottingham Forest spell

Chris Hughton didn’t have the best of times as Nottingham Forest manager, but he has earned praise from Reds coach Andy Reid.

Hughton was sacked little more than 12 months ago after overseeing a dismal start to the 2021/22 campaign. He left with Forest propping up the Championship table, having registered just one point from their opening seven matches.

The former Brighton and Hove Albion boss had replaced Sabri Lamouchi at the helm in October 2020. But he was axed after less than a year in charge, with his Forest record reading 14 wins from 53 games.

However, while Hughton came under fire from supporters for poor results and less than attractive football, Reid has singled out his work ethic at the City Ground. The Irishman was part of the Under-23s coaching set-up at the time and says Hughton proved a good sounding board.

“It didn’t work out for him (Hughton) at Forest, but he gave me some fantastic advice and access – everything I needed,” Reid, who is now first-team coach under Steve Cooper, told The Coaches’ Voice. “And he was always, always there.

“After six months, Chris Cohen left and I took over the Under-23s. I made sure I got in before 7am every day, to give myself as much time as I could to get organised.

“Every morning, Chris Hughton was in before me, and he was also one of the last to leave. His work ethic was second to none.”

Reid added: “Steve Cooper coming in as Chris Hughton’s replacement gave me another opportunity to learn from someone new. Steven Reid was a coach I had known for a long time, while Alan Tate also came in with Steve Cooper – he has been a brilliant link between us all.”
