Co Tyrone teacher Séanna Corr remembered as someone who ‘inspired generations’

Tributes have been paid to an ‘inspiring and caring’ Co Tyrone schoolteacher who passed away after an illness.

Séanna Corr from Edendork passed away on Tuesday following an illness, with her former school St Patrick’s College in Dungannon posting a touching tribute to her after teaching at the school for 26 years.

The school described the Spanish teacher as a ‘lady of integrity’ who inspired many students to learn the language.

“Her career in teaching is hallmarked with her genuine love for the language of Spanish. Her classroom was a hub of activity, where young people felt cared for, included, welcomed and respected,” the school said.

“Her lessons were vibrant and progressive, and she never lost her drive to learn and share her practice - not only with her students but also with her colleagues.

“Mrs Corr encouraged and inspired generations of young people to take up Spanish at GCSE and she was a teacher who went above and beyond to ensure their success and development of spoken, written, and listening skills."

The statement continued: “Mrs Corr was a lady of integrity and she was genuine in her care for others. Throughout her illness she showed dignity and grace, motivating a whole community to want to help and support.

“We cycled to Mexico and back in miles and we prayed the Rosary for her. Her faith was her solace and we all admired our courage and strength. Her hope was infectious and she lived each day with a true attitude of gratitude.

“We know that God will have heard the prayers for Mrs Corr and we trust that she will rest in eternal peace, in a rich reward for her life and service.

“Our deepest sympathies and prayers for strength go to her husband, her son and daughter, her daddy and sisters and all those who loved her."

Seánna was also an All Ireland judo champion and a Commonwealth medal winner.

The mum of two was remembered following her death by local GAA club Edendork GAC, where Seánna was a dedicated member.

“Seánna was a regular attendee at Pairc Arthur where for many years she along with her husband Ciaran supported her beloved children Niall and Eva,” a statement from the club said.

“Seánna was at every match, home and away and travelled to several Feile competitions as far away as Wexford and Kerry to support our teams.

“Always with a smile on her face and always warm and friendly, Seánna will be sorely missed by us all.

“Seánna and her family have been in our thoughts and prayers in recent months. She was hugely respected as is her husband, son and daughter.

“We will continue to pray for and offer support to the Corr and McGuigan families in the time ahead.”

The funeral of the local schoolteacher will take place in St Patrick’s Church, Dungannon on Thursday.
