Co Down man close to target of 100 Slieve Donard runs in a year

A Co Down man is close to achieving his goal of running up and down Slieve Donard in the Mournes 100 times in a year.

Steven Morgan from Hillsborough said a milestone in his life provided the inspiration for half the challenge earlier this year and it escalated from there.

"I turned 50 this year and I think it was New Year's Day we started," he told Belfast Live.

"Somebody had said why don't you do something for turning 50 so I said let's do 50."

Steven is a member of BARF - the Belfast Association of Rock Climbers and Fell Runners, so had experience of mountain running.

He said he believes the target of 100 might be a first.

"I turned 50 in August there and we finished the 50th run two weeks before my birthday.

"Then we were having dinner in August and somebody said to me 'sure you've done 50, why not do another 50?' - why not, sure keep her lit!

"I don't think anyone's done this before either."

He said he had recently added a charity element to the challenge, having initially resisted as he did not wish anyone to feel under pressure to donate given the cost-of-living crisis.

"I hadn't been doing it before as I didn't want to add any stress for people having to give in the times we're in," he said.

"Because it hasn't been done before though, I thought we may as well so I've just set it up recently.

"My dad had a stroke five years ago, so I phoned up NI Chest, Heart and Stroke and have got the fundraising page set up now."

He said he has been helped along the way with the running by his friends from BARF.

"It's the people that come with me that make it because doing the same mountain can get repetitive or tedious," he said.

"But the friends I have with me, they're amazing, they're what's keeping me going.

"I know every rock and blade of grass now, we've been up in the snow and everything."

Steven is aiming to finish up the challenge on December 17, by which stage he will have run about 700 miles.
