CMS Ends Marketplace Subsidies for 189,000 Enrollees with Duplicate Coverage or Death Records, Projects $1.5 Billion Savings

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has ended federal Marketplace subsidies for 189,000 people who also had Medicare, Medicaid, or Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) coverage or whose records showed they had died, the agency announced October 14. In its release on the second year of savings, CMS projects the move could save taxpayers about $1.5 billion over the next year.

The $1.5 billion figure is a CMS projection. The agency did not say how many of the 189,000 had duplicate coverage and how many were listed as deceased, and it did not publish the method behind the estimate.
