CMAT finally made it to Brixton Academy — and was crowned the new queen of high camp

CMAT played Brixton Academy after postponing due to a dental emergency - (Sarah Doyle)

After a fallow period of half-arsed, whispery vocals, uninspiring takes on vintage soul sounds, and identikit male singer-songwriters warbling on about getting their heart broken, a welcome shift has finally arrived in the land of pop — for the first time in ages, the genre has rediscovered its sense of humour.

Alongside the kitschy excess of emerging stars like Chappell Roan, Irish singer CMAT — who nicknames herself ‘Dunboyne Diana’ as an amusing homage to the original People’s Princess — is one of the stand-out names leading the charge, and belated headlined Brixton last night after her original dates were cancelled thanks to a nasty tooth infection.
