Clydebank homes evacuated as huge fire rips through derelict care home in dead of night

A massive fire ripped through a former care home in Clydebank late last night.

Firefighters were called to the scene shortly before 10pm and battled into the early hours to control the blaze.

Pictures and videos from the incident show the old Frank Downie home in Ottowa Crescent well alight, with emergency services battling to bring huge flames under control.

Roads were closed and residents evacuated from the surrounding area as a precaution.

Police confirmed that Clydemuir Primary was opened to give shelter to those displaced while the incident was brought under control.

Firefighters have so far not reported any casualties, but revealed that six appliances raced to the scene after they were alerted at 9.36pm to blaze at the derelict building.

West Dunbartonshire Council posted on Twitter in the early hours of this morning warning: "Clydbank - Ottawa Crescent, we advise those in G81 area near former Frank Downie House care home to stay home, keep windows and doors closed. Fire services are attending and nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution. Avoid the area."

And a Police Scotland spokesperson added: "Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service continue to deal with a fire at a derelict building in Clydebank.

"Shortly after 9.45pm last night the fire was reported at Frank Downie House in Ottawa Crescent. A number of roads in the area remain closed and a small number of residents close to the fire have been evacuated as a precaution. The public should continue to avoid the area. There are no reports of any injuries.

"A joint Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service investigation will take place to establish the cause of the fire."

"Clydemuir Primary School had been opened as a receiving centre for any residents who had been evacuated. Those who have not been evacuated are advised to keep their windows closed."
