Closure of DWP Falkirk office 'devastating blow' as jobs at risk

The close of a DWP building in Falkirk putting jobs at risk has been described as a "devastating blow" for the town.

Scottish Green MSP for Central Scotland Gillian McKay, has slammed the plans to shut Callander Gate and demanded that UK Government ministers rethink about the closures.

According to the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) Union, more than 500 jobs could be lost across Falkirk and Clydebank with offices in Glasgow, Dundee, Kirkcaldy, Bathgate, Clydebank, Stirling and Aberdeen also set to close their doors.

Gillian Mackay MSP said: "These are just the latest in a long line of job losses from the UK Government, which has included significant closure of HMRC offices.

"Families in Falkirk and across Scotland are already struggling to make ends meet.

"This will be devastating for my constituents and the UK Government’s timing could not be worse.

"I urge the ministers to practice what they preach.

"The talk is about "levelling up" but in reality they are cutting jobs in some of Scotland’s hardest hit communities.

"They must consider the consequences their actions will have on the workforce and urgently reverse their decision."

The DWP announced yesterday plans to close 42 offices with 1,300 employees facing the prospect of moving to an alternative location.

Work and Pensions minister David Rutley said: "In terms of our plans, we, as I said, have been working very closely with colleagues and with PCS over recent months.

"There are going to be around 12,000 colleagues who will be moving from one site to another in close proximity, around 28 sites involved there.

"In terms of colleagues that will be affected where there is no other strategic site nearby, there are around 1,300 colleagues that could be involved."

Mr Rutley added that the UK Government would "see what opportunities there are within DWP" and other departments for affected staff, and added that the change "does not impact job centres and the customer-facing interactions".

He also made it clear that the closures would "not affect front-of-house Jobcentre Plus" offices.
