A bakery in Clifton has confirmed it has permanently closed its doors due after rising costs made it "impossible to continue". Nata & Co, which makes the famous Pastel de Nata - a Portuguese egg tart pastry dusted with cinnamon - has confirmed it has now closed its branch on Queens Road after less than a year.
The business was founded in Cardiff in 2012 by Filipe Brito who has previous experience working in the family business in Portugal. Speaking ahead of the opening, which was in August, Mr Brito said they had decided to open in Bristol because they "had lots of requests from our customers who were travelling from Bristol to Cardiff to buy our products".
It was launched after the team noticed a lack of authentic Portuguese pastries, opening first in Cardiff - which has two sites - and later in Bath in 2020. All three of these sites remain open.

A spokesperson for Nata and Co confirmed: "Unfortunately, we had to close the shop, the overhead was too high, and with the electricity rates rise it was impossible to continue. It was a very hard decision that we had to make, but we did not have any choice.
"The last day was June 6. At the moment we do not have any plans to relocate."
Nata & Co had moved into the old Patisserie Valerie store on Queens Road, which closed in 2019. It sold pastel de natas, cakes, hampers and vouchers.
