Clifford Chance's staff monitoring

CC calls in the lawyers

When it comes to work-from-home policies, Clifford Chance has spent most of the post-pandemic era as the Magic Circle law firm of choice for solicitors averse to the daily grind of commuting.

Where rivals asked staff to come in three or four days a week, CC went for a more relaxed “five days per fortnight” policy. It even boasted that its fully open-plan future office, where the firm will move in 2028, was built with hybrid working in mind.

But following rival Slaughter and May’s lead, staff were told this week that bosses will start monitoring entry card data to make sure everyone is clocking in for the minimum number of days.

If you don’t make it in half the time, expect a stern word from above, to get you on a plan to up your attendance.

The policy hasn’t gone down well with everyone. Some suits (or rather, top halves of suits) are even considering a walkout.

But it looks like they’ll soon have to make the trek to Canary Wharf, or face the long arm of the law…Unless they give their pass to a colleague.
