A rare restoration project in Clerkenwell in the form of a Grade II-listed Georgian townhouse untouched over 30-plus years.
For sale for £3 million, the period house in Britton Street is arranged over five floors.
Four bedrooms and two bathrooms make up the top three levels, with the kitchen and two reception spaces found on the lower floors.
The front door remains untouched, along with the original architraves and joinery inside.
The house survived the demolition of much of the street in the 1870s to make way for Clerkenwell Road.
It was purchased by the current owner as a family dwelling in 1997, but the passion for the renovation project was lost after a series of changes in personal circumstances.
“The intended refurbishment was put on hold,” explains Danny Brewer of the Unique Property Company who are marketing the home. “Since then, it’s fallen into disarray.”
In 2018, under the stewardship of prominent architect, Peter Morris, a lengthy planning process culminated in the near agreement of a stylish yet sympathetic refurbishment of the house.
But the plans fell through.
“They were submitted before the recent changes in building control,” Brewer tells us. “And are much more likely to be approved now – especially with the current onus on making older houses habitable.”
