Clement singles out Dessers for believing as Rangers goal hero increases UCL chances

Rangers manager Philippe Clement knows Cyriel Dessers' last-grasp goal to earn his side an important UEFA Champions League round three draw against Dynamo Kyiv will hopefully help change supporters impression of the striker.

Dessers, who was brought to the club last summer by Michael Beale in a deal worth over £4.5million, has repeatedly been made the scrape goat by many Rangers fans.

Yet, with tonight's equaliser taking his tally to 23 goals from 57 appearances in Light Blue, maybe we are starting to see the real Dessers shine through.

Asked about his centre-forwards contribution during the first leg clash in Lublin, the Rangers boss was quick to heap praise on the Nigerian internationalist as well as Vaclav Cerny, who leaped off the bench to play an influential role in making sure it's all to play for at Rangers' changed home of Hampden Park next Tuesday.

"For sure," Clement said on BBC Sportsound of Rangers deserving a draw in Poland, with Dessers’ acute finish cancelling out Andriy Yarmalenko’s first half opener.

"We had six balls on target and they had three balls on target today. We kept on pushing until the end to get a result and I'm happy about that because we want to get in every team this mentality, to keep on working, going and believing until the last season.

"We have several new players now and they did it. Vaclav was directly important with his assist and Cyriel also kept on pushing to get the goal because he had a few chances that he finished very well and the goalkeeper saved really well. So he kept on believing and I'm happy for him that he scored the goal.

"If you compare him with seven months ago he does much more things, really good for the team. Maybe people have a perception about him but I know there are no defenders anymore who like to play against him and he's only growing so that's what we want."
