A clean-up has taken place at a location in Craigneuk that has suffered from large scale fly-tipping.
The lane at Glencleland Road has been the scene of unacceptable dumping on multiple occasions and last month it was revealed that the latest bout of fly-tipping included dozens of bin bags, a smashed-up mirror and a mattress being dumped.
A burned-out wooden structure was also discarded, as were items of litter such as milk cartons, crisp packets and takeaway food boxes.
Following a visit last month, Conservative councillor Nathan Wilson reported the ongoing issue to North Lanarkshire’s environmental services, asking for a thorough clean up to be carried out.
Councillor Wilson said: “Fly-tipping is a blight on far too many communities across North Lanarkshire and there can be no excuse for the illicit dumping of used items.
“In the campaign for the council elections, I made clear my concerns about the all too common occurrence and that it was an issue I wanted to continue tackling if re-elected.
“I am delighted that the horrendous fly-tipping on the lane at Glencleland Road in Craigneuk has now been removed by the council.
“Whilst it is welcome that the site has been cleared, it is important for the council to assess what additional measures can be implemented at the lane to address the issue over the long term.
“When reporting the most recent fly-tipping at this location, I also stressed that the local authority needed to consider steps such as closing off the lane, CCTV and signage warning against dumping used materials here.
“The area has long been a fly-tipping hotspot and the issue of more permanent measures to try and prevent repeat incidents in future is something that I urge officials to look at in greater detail.”
