Clean-up operation after 'acidic substance' spilled from lorry on pavement

A clean-up operation was launched after an 'acidic substance' spilled from a lorry onto a pavement near a retail park in Bolton. Police and firefighters were called to Mansell Way on the Middlebrook retail and leisure park at about 1.30pm on Wednesday.

Firefighters, reportedly in hazmat suits, spent around one hour and 45 minutes at the scene. Transport for Greater Manchester earlier tweeted the road had been closed following the incident, but a GMP spokesperson said that wasn't the case.

They added: "We were called just after 13.30pm today, Wednesday November 2, to reports of an incident on Mansell Way, Horwich. Officers were in attendance as well as colleagues from GMFRS.

"It was established that a lorry carrying an acidic substance had shed its load and a small amount of the substance had leaked onto the nearby pavement. There are no road closures."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "At around 1.45pm this afternoon we were called to attend an incident on Mansell Way, Lostock, involving a quantity of a suspected hazardous material spilt onto the roadway.

"Fire engines from Bolton Central and Wigan were quickly mobilised to the scene, where crews worked to contain the spillage and make the area safe. Firefighters liaised with colleagues from Greater Manchester Police and the local authority and were in attendance for around an hour and three quarters."
