Diarmuid O’Carroll was delighted St Mirren honoured the memory of Billy Thomson with a win and a clean sheet.
The Buddies saluted their former keeper – immortalised in the club’s Hall of Fame – ahead of Saturday’s 1-0 win over Ross County.
It was the first game at the SMiSA Stadium since Billy’s sad death at the age of 64. And Saints No 2 O’Carroll feels everyone can be proud of their contribution on a poignant day.
He told Renfrewshire Live Sport: “It shows the class of the club and the fans – and credit to the Ross County fans as well – with how the minute’s applause was accepted.
“I know he was very close to some of the staff here and it’s right that this tribute was done.
“It’s nice for his family and his memory that we were able to get the result.
“Jamie Langfield [goalkeeping coach] has done some fantastic work with Trevor [Carson] and was close to Billy and it’s fitting that it was a clean sheet in a home game for his memory.”
Declan Gallagher grabbed an early winner for Saints – but limped off near the end with a hamstring injury.
“We’re a team that is better when we have a lead,” O’Carroll added.
“We’re tough to break down as our clean sheet record and home record shows.
“For Deccy, once it is settled we will probably get him scanned – hopefully it’s a mild one but it’s pot luck at the minute.”
