Claude Cowork for Windows — how to download and install the AI assistant

Claude.

If you’re looking for an AI assistant that can handle bigger jobs while you turn your focus on something else, Claude Cowork is worth a look.

Cowork was originally only available to macOS users but this has now changed, bringing the agentic power of Cowork to Windows devices. Claude can directly access files on your device, meaning you aren't interrupted with requests to upload them. You can also schedule tasks to run ahead of time, all without having to write a single line of code.

That could mean comparing laptops across multiple tabs and turning the findings into a personalized buyer’s guide, sorting a downloads folder full of screenshots and PDFs into something you can make sense of, or building a presentation from a pile of rough notes.

Before you begin, note that Cowork is only available on paid Claude plans at the time of writing. If your PC runs Windows 10 or later, here’s how to install it and get started.

1. Download Claude

Regardless of which operating system you’re using, you’ll have to download and install the Claude app to use Cowork. There’s currently no online-only version.

If you’re using Windows, to get started, head to Claude’s website and download the Windows version of the chatbot.

2. Run the setup file

My installer was only 7MB, so the download took barely a second. Once the setup file has finished downloading, run it.

3. Wait for the installer to finish

The installer will do its own thing, including downloading the rest of the files. Just make sure you have an active internet connection. Wait for the installation process to finish, then move on to the next step.

4. Get started

Once the installation process is complete, you should see a button that allows you to proceed with logging in. Click on get started to continue.

5. Sign in to Claude

You’ll need a paid Claude account to use Cowork. Sign in with your existing Claude account or use your Google account instead.

6. Finalize your settings

Next, you’ll be prompted to create a keyboard shortcut and a Claude menu bar launcher. Enable the settings you want to keep and click on continue.

7. Navigate to Cowork

Once the setup is complete, you’ll see the familiar Claude interface from your browser now running as a desktop app on your Windows device. The default view is Chat.

To start using Claude Cowork, click the Cowork tab at the top of the app window on your screen.

8. Type in your prompt

Once you’re in the Cowork tab, you can insert your first prompt into the text box at the center of your page.
