Class X: Girls outperform boys, private schools do well

NEW DELHI: Students getting 90% or more rose to an all-time high in absolute numbers in the Class 10 CBSE exams, the results of which were declared on the same day as Class 12. While 2,36,993 students (11.3% of total) scored 90%-plus, close to 64,908 students (3.1%) bagged a score of 95%-plus, reports Shradha Chettri. In 2021, when there were no Board exams and students were assessed on other parameters, 2,00,962 students scored 90% and above and 57,824 had scored 95%-plus. However, while nearly all students (99.9%) were declared to have passed in 2021, the percentage dropped to 94.4% this year.

In absolute figures, the number of high scorers (90% and above and 95% and above) in Class X CBSE exams were higher this year than in 2019. But in percentage terms, 2019 had the biggest share of high scorers.

In 2019, there were 2,25,143 who had scored 90% and above, constituting 12.8% of the total. Similarly, there were 57,256 students in the 95% and above bracket in 2019, comprising 3.25% of the total examinees.

For Class X, as with Class XII this year, the Board exam was divided into two terms, 1 and 2. For the calculation of the results 30% weightage was given to the Term 1 and 70% to Term 2 theory papers, while the syllabus was cut by 30% to compensate for the learning loss caused by the pandemic.

Explaining reasons for the drop in pass percentages, Ashok Pandey, director, Ahlcon Schools, said, “It is clear that the students who could not do well in Term 1 could not recover and do well in Term 2. If the first term results had come on time, children could have taken remedial measures and been much more careful. Not covering the pass percentage in two examinations it only suggests that the pandemic has had an impact on some students and the learning gap was further widened.”

This year, around 5.1% of students have been placed in compartment.

As per two schools, their students scored a full marks in all the subjects they had appeared for. Gargi Patel a student of SR International School, Bareilly, scored 600 out of 600 while Mayank Yadav, of Amity International School in Noida scored a perfect 100 in English, French, Math, Science and Social Science.

Keeping up with the trend of the past two years, the board did not issue a toppers list but they said it will be issuing merit certificates to the top 0.1% students. There are about 12,598 students who will be receiving merit certificates in standard mathematics, highest in comparison to other subjects, while 9,123 students are part of the merit list for science subjects.

Girls again performed better than boys with the pass percentage being 95.2% and 93.8%, respectively. The pass percentage of transgenders stood at 90%.

Following the Class XII trend, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) had the best pass percentage of 99.7%, a slight drop from 99.99% in 2021. With the exception of 2021, this year’s JNV pass figures were an all-time high.

The Kendriya Vidyalayas slipped to third position from the top in 2021, when their pass figure was 100%, to 96.6% this year. Even the Central Tibetan School Administration’s results witnessed a drop from the 100% recorded last year.

By comparison, the private schools performed well, bagging the second spot with a pass percentage of nearly 96.9% — a drop from last year but a much bigger leap since 2020, when its pass percentage stood at 92.8%.

The government and government-aided schools had the lowest pass percentages at 80.68% and 76.73%, respectively.

Among the regions, Trivandrum again topped with 99.7% followed by Bengaluru at 99.2% and Chennai at 99%. Unlike for Class XII, Delhi region's performance in Class X was dismal. It occupied the third and second last position, ahead of Guwahati. The Delhi east pass percentage was 87% and that of Delhi west 85.9%.

Even the pass percentage of children with special needs dropped to 93.4% from 99.4% in 2021, even though the number of high scorers among them increased. This year, there were 290 of them who had scored 90% and above as against 224 in 2021 and 63 had 95% or more.
