Clan seal big win over Fife Flyers but beaten on the road by Cardiff Devils

Clan were on top form to topple Scottish rivals Fife Flyers.

But the Braehead Arena outfit couldn’t follow up their impressive 5-2 home victory after crashing to a 3-1 away defeat to Cardiff Devils.

On Saturday night Clan made it three wins in a row thanks to strikes from Mitch Jones, Guillaume Gauthier (2), Braylon Shmyr and Colton Yellow Horn.

It took the men in purple just four minutes to mark the scoreboard.

Driving at the Flyers defence, Rodney Southam showed no fear in the two-on-two situation, skipping past the visitor’s backline before back handing across the face of goal for Jones to slam home.

Clan doubled their lead eight minutes into the second and after seeing his first attempt bounce off the post, Gauthier was first to react, reaching into the crease to dispatch on the second attempt.

With six minutes remaining, the win was all but secured as Gauthier claimed his second of the night with the Canadian on hand between the circles to slam home the rebound from the spilled shot.

Less than three minutes into the third it was four as Shmyr picked the puck up on the blue line as he proved too fast for Fife goalie Shane Owen, rounding the netminder before scooping into the empty net.

A minute later the hard work on the defensive end was undone as their shutout was broken, with Carson Stadnyk pulling one back for the visitors.

With five minutes left on the clock the Clan had their fifth of the night. as Yellow Horn executed a sweet finish on the powerplay.

Flyers claimed their second of the night not long after through Matthew Carter on the powerplay, but it was only a consolation strike.

In Cardiff on Sunday Clan pushed Jamie Crooks into the top line, while Colton Waltz made his debut after signing during the week.

Brock Beukeboom went close with a low chance, as Devils goalie Mac Carruth pulled off a good low save.

Guillaume Gauthier’s shot flashed across the Devils crease as Clan burst forward on a turnaround then Cole Sanford saw big chance denied by Shane Starrett, who look in top form again.

However the home side finally broke the deadlock when a huge drive from Matt Register on the powerplay layered into the Clan net and Devils got their noses in front.

Devils added a second in the early stages of the third as Brodie Reid sent a shot in at the angle, taking the pass perfectly from Justin Crandall.

Clan reacted by pulling one back a minute or so later when Mikko Vainonen stopped the puck from leaving the Devils zone, taking it forward and finishing a shot to halve the deficit.

Gauthier almost levelled with ten to go as the visitors looked to put the pressure on in a powerplay, but hit the post to deny the Clan an equaliser before Mitch Jones hit the bar a minute later.

Reid wrapped it up with an empty net goal late on to secure the points for Cardiff in the final minute.
