This year’s Epsom Derby winner City Of Troy was crowned 2024 Horse Of The Year at the recent Cartier Awards ceremony at the Dorchester Hotel in London – winning the prize for a sixth time for his trainer Aidan O’Brien.
City Of Troy Gives Aidan O’Brien His Sixth Horse Of The Year Cartier Award
The fairytale end to his time on the track didn’t come off in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, but City Of Troy still bowed out of his eight-race career with his head held high and scooped one final award before being sent off to stud in 2025.
City Of Troy fluffed the start at Del Mar earlier in November in the Breeders’ Cup and as a result faced the uncomfortable kick-back – which led the 3 year-old to trail in 8th (of 14).
However, his trio of Group One wins earlier in the season – in the Epsom Derby (watch below), Coral Eclipse and Juddmonte International Stakes – were good enough for City Of Troy to be crowned the 2024 Horse Of The Year at the Cartier Awards.
City Of Troy was following in the footsteps of Giant’s Causeway, Rock Of Gibraltar, Dylan Thomas, Minding and St Mark’s Basilica – who also won the Horse Of The Year award for trainer horse racing Aidan O’Brien.
Aidan O’Brien Has Now Won 55 Cartier Awards
As well as City Of Troy’s award, O’Brien also had his Lake Victoria crowned the Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly, Kyprios the Cartier Stayers, and City Of Troy won the Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt award too.
In total, Aidan O’Brien has now racked up an incredible 55 Cartier Awards over the years – see them all below.
However, Aidan O’Brien wasn’t in attendance at the ceremony – he’s in Tokyo overseeing Auguste Rodin’s Japan Cup bid this weekend.
Away from Ballydoyle, there were also awards for this season’s QEII Stakes winner Charyn and Coronation Stakes heroine Porta Fortuna – see the full list of winners at the end of this article.

Will City Of Troy Race On At 4 Years-Old?
No. City Of Troy has been retired and will not race on as a 4 year-old. He’ll now stand at the Coolmore Stud.
City Of Troy Will Stand At Stud For €75,000
If you’ve got a spare $75k down the back of the sofa (and a nice mare), you could have a City Of Troy offspring.
He’ll stand at the Coolmore Stud in Ireland – which compares to the €30k Auguste Rodin will stand for when he retires after the Japan Cup.
While this €75k figure is the same as another Derby winner – Camelot. But way less than Wootton Bassett, who will stand in 2025 for a massive €300k.
