City of London Police officer flipped car while drunk after rugby boozing session

A City of London Police officer resigned in disgrace after flipping his car in a drink-drive crash following a rugby boozing session.

The officer – who was granted anonymity by a misconduct tribunal – got behind the wheel of a black BMW after sinking seven pints of beer, and crashed the vehicle in Tattenhoe Street in Milton Keynes.

The PC pleaded guilty to drink driving on April 6, and was handed a fine and an 18-month road ban when he was sentenced on July 9.

At a misconduct hearing, City of London Police Commissioner Peter O’Doherty found that the officer – dubbed ‘Constable X’ – would have been dismissed without notice if he had not already resigned.

“On the April 6 2024, you drove your vehicle whilst significantly intoxicated, and well over the legal limit, causing the vehicle to crash and turn over”, he said.

The officer put forward to the misconduct hearing that his mental health had been affected at the time of the incident.

But Commissioner O’Doherty concluded: “I don’t deny that your emotional and mental state may have contributed to your decision to drive drunk.

“But on the night in question you had been playing rugby, went to the pub, drank seven pints of beer, and then drove.

“There is no evidence to suggest, on the balance of probabilities, that you were not in control of your decisions or actions.”

The officer quit the force after being convicted.

He was found guilty at the misconduct hearing of gross misconduct, and his name will now be added to a list of shamed officers barred from future roles in policing.
