The Cinematic Nangloeng programme is screening five movie classics curated by the Thai Film Archive and the Thai Film Foundation at the century-old Sala Chalermthani wooden cinema in Bangkok's Old Town, running until Saturday.
The five-day screening begins today with Ruen Pae (The Houseboat, 1961). Directed by Prince Bhanubhan Yukol, the movie follows three friends Jen (Sor Asanajinda), Kaew (Chaiya Suriyan) and Rin (Jinfong) who love the same women, Penh (Maria Jang), while sharing a bamboo boathouse. They follow different paths until destiny brings them back to a tragic event.
On Wednesday is Tone (A Man Called Tone, 1970), Piak Poster's directorial debut that broke new ground. It follows Tone (Chaiya Suriyan), an orphaned village temple boy who is in love with the rich girl Kularb (Jaruwan Panyopas). When he saves city boy Aod (Sayan Chantaraviboon) from gangsters, he is invited to live and study in Bangkok, where he eventually falls in love with Aod's sister Dang (Aranya Namwong).
