A pillow given to Cillian Murphy by Emily Blunt on the set of Oppenheimer resulted in a mishap that led to the actor having to get his head glued shut. The trio of Blunt, Murphy, and Robert Downey Jr., all of whom are nominated for Oscars for their roles in the biopic, made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to discuss the film.
Murphy shared insights into the weight loss he underwent for his role, mentioning going to bed hungry and feeling constantly cold due to reduced body fat. Despite the challenges, Blunt believed that what Murphy needed most during production was sleep. She decided to gift him a special pillow to aid in his rest.
One night, while enjoying the comfort of the pillow, Murphy woke up and accidentally hit his head on the bedside table while trying to adjust his position. The mishap resulted in a head injury that required him to have his head glued shut before returning to work.
Murphy recounted the incident, expressing his surprise at the sudden turn of events. He highlighted the unusual sleeping conditions during production, with early wake-up times and unfamiliar surroundings contributing to the accident.
To address the injury, makeup artist Luisa Abel was called in to assist Murphy. She skillfully concealed the glued head injury, ensuring it went unnoticed in the final film.
Oppenheimer emerged as the most-nominated film at the Oscars, securing 13 nominations, including a nod for best picture. Murphy, Blunt, and Downey received recognition for their acting performances, while director Christopher Nolan was acknowledged for best adapted screenplay.
