Ciarán Whelan agrees with Kildare manager's comments on Dublin's unfair advantage

Ciaran Whelan feels Kildare manager Glen Ryan made a valid point when he complained about Dublin's Leinster semi-final taking place at Croke Park.

Croke Park was used as the neutral venue for yesterday's Leinster semi-final clashes between Louth and Offaly, as well as Dublin v Kildare.

But Lilywhites boss Ryan feels the use of Croke Park as a neutral venue for Dublin is unfair, especially considering GAA HQ is the de-facto home of the Boys in Blue.

"The Yankees when they play a supposedly neutral venue, they get to play in a neutral venue," said Ryan after Sunday's game.

"It’s frustrating. All these calls seem to come at the big moments when it’s going into the deciding stages of the game.

"(Referee) Fergal Kelly I thought did a great job - but in general from the sideline, from officials, you just always feel that you’re getting treated second-rate."

Heading into the All-Ireland series, Dublin will be able to call Croke Park their home for two of their three games, as GAA HQ fits the bill for both a home tie and a neutral venue.

Dublin legend Whelan believes Ryan has a point and explained how Dublin are 'comfortable' playing in Croke Park because they play 'seven or eight' games there every year.

"Yeah, I think he has a valid point," said Whelan when asked about Ryan's comments, "I think both those games today, if they were in provincial grounds it might have created a better atmosphere, I think we have to be honest about that when you look attendances over the last couple of years for Leinster semi-finals.

"The Leinster council make that fixture. Dublin have been playing there for years whether they're losing or they're winning, but there's no doubt about it, when you are comfortable and you play there seven or eight times a year, you are very comfortable with the environment and Kildare will look at that today as probably a missed opportunity.

"There's a massive amount of frustration from Glen Ryan's perspective that he probably feels if it was in another ground it may have given them a little bit of a better opportunity because as I said, Dublin are still comfortable coming into that stretch."
