Boghall Parish Church has been awarded ‘C Category List Status’ by Historic Environment Scotland due to its unique and striking roof.
The status was granted following a public consultation to gather the views of local people and visitors on the building.
Boghall Parish Church was built between 1963-65 and has an unusual saddle shaped roof.
The church is a notable example of a post-war church and the saddle-shaped roof is considered an innovative feature which is very rare in Scotland.
The quality and ambition of the design of Boghall Church is unusual for a small, provincial church that was built for a newly established local authority estate.
Designation consultants found that Boghall Church ‘reflects the aspirations of the designers and of the Church of Scotland, but also the activity and optimism of a period which sought to make real improvements to the socio-economic fabric of Scotland through design and urban planning.’
Local MSP for Linlithgow, Fiona Hyslop, has congratulated the church and its parishioners.
Fiona Hyslop commented: “I am delighted that Boghall Parish Church has achieved C Category Listed Status. The roof is innovative, bold and unique and it deserves to be commemorated due to its special architectural and historic significance.
"The local parishioners work hard for their church and their community, supporting local people. It is fantastic news that this church, which is a cornerstone of the Boghall and Bathgate community, has been recognised in this way.”
