Christy Dignam's love of football and one club in particular

Tributes continue to pour in following the death of legendary Aslan frontman Christy Dignam.

The popular singer passed away on Tuesday following a long illness after being diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer in 2013.

The 65-year-old Crazy World hitmaker had been receiving palliative care since December after he spent six months in the Beaumont Hospital.

Christy was a huge football fan, with Bohemians sharing a picture of him shaking hands with former manager Keith Long and another of him performing live in a Bohs jersey following his death.

In his last ever interview, Christy told Ryan Tubridy how he was once flown to Glasgow by Dermot Desmond to attend a Celtic and Rangers match, which the Hoops won 2-1 during the 2018/19 season.

He said: "We were playing in a place down in Cork.

"After the gig, the manager said the owner wants to meet you. I said I'd meet him for 10 minutes.

"He had never heard of Aslan, he heard it through Scotland. Now he own's 12 percent of Celtic.

"I was like a lima, stuck onto his back!"

Christy added: "He flew us over then, for one of the Rangers games in a private jet."

He previously recalled on the Late Late Show how he got a green diamond in his teeth after watching Celtic win the game.

He said: "Celtic scored first and then Rangers scored and they brought on your man Jermaine Defoe and Rangers were starting to get on top in the game.

"I said 'ah Jesus, these are going to win', and I said 'if we this match, I'm going to get a green diamond in my tooth' and they scored so I'm stuck with this."

Christy also sang in Tallaght Stadium when Shamrock Rovers faced Celtic in the summer of 2017, with the Scottish side running out 9-0 winners.

He also attended the Liam Miller Memorial match between Manchester United Legends v Republic of Ireland & Celtic Legends at Pairc Ui Chaoimh in 2018.
