Christopher Nolan compares The Odyssey to Marvel as new trailer reveals Cyclops

Matt Damon as The Odysseus in the new The Odyssey trailer.

Christopher Nolan has revealed a new trailer for The Odyssey and it's just as epic as we expected. The footage gives us a better look at the star-studded cast as well as showcasing Cyclops for the first time.

It begins with Matt Damon's Odysseus speaking to Charlize Theron's Calypso about his life before landing on her island. "Help me go home," he pleads as we get a glimpse of what home is. Robert Pattinson's Antinous is plotting to take power as Tom Holland's Telemachus and Anne Hathaway's Penelope try to resist, determined to believe that Odysseus will return.

The trailer also features glimpses of epic battles, including a Trojan Horse sequence and a fight with giants. Cyclops also appears in the new teaser as we hear Odysseus tell his men that he thinks he's asleep. Er, we don't think so! Watch it below.

Speaking about the movie on The Late Show (H/T Variety), Nolan acknowledged that he has a lot of comic book stars in the new film, including Pattinson and Holland. However, it seems the worlds are not as unrelated as you might assume.

"Even comic book culture, whether you’re talking about Marvel or D.C. or all the rest, a lot of it comes directly from the Homeric Epics," Nolan said. "The thing about Homer is, nobody knows if that was a person. Homer, in a way, is the sort of George Lucas of his time."

He added: "The thing about Homer, it is the Marvel of its day. It’s very directly this desire for us to feel or believe gods could walk amongst us, and I think the modern comic book is kind of our expression of that."

The Odyssey is released on July 17, 2026. For more upcoming movies, here's our list of all the 2026 movie release dates you need to know about.
