Christopher Nkunku key in Arsenal beating Chelsea to Edu's 'priority' Gabriel Jesus transfer

Arsenal could rely on Christopher Nkunku making a move to Chelsea to beat their London rivals in signing Gabriel Jesus this summer if recent reports are to be believed. It comes as both London clubs are linked with a move for the Manchester City forward.

For the Gunners, there is a need to strengthen in the forward department, having lacked a consistent goal-scoring centre-forward throughout the previous campaign. With Alexandre Lacazette leaving for Lyon too, it leaves space to be filled in that department.

Discussing his transfer plans, Mikel Arteta said: “He puts the ball in the net – that’s priority number one. Goal threat. Any successful team needs enough goal threat in the squad. Without it, you have nothing.”

Similar can be said of the Blues, who struggled to find the back of the net when it mattered most. That is despite signing Romelu Lukaku for roughly £100million.

However, after just one season back in the Premier League, reports suggest that the Belgian is pushing for a move back to Inter Milan this summer. That leaves Thomas Tuchel needing to find a solution to scoring goals in the upcoming transfer window.

Both clubs appear to have turned to Gabriel Jesus to solve their problems, with the Brazilian only having one-year remaining on his contract at the Etihad. However, they aren’t alone as Tottenham and Real Madrid are also reportedly monitoring the situation.

If the Gunners want to be able to land the 25-year-old ahead of their London rivals though, they may rely on another target. According to Fabrizio Romano in his article for Caught Offside, the Blues are also eyeing Christoper Nkunku as a potential option this summer.

While the Frenchman is appreciated, the reporter claims that he is an option in case the Jesus deal doesn’t work out, suggesting the latter is a priority signing. Whether that turns out to be the case remains to be seen, with the transfer window just one day away from opening, and a potential bidding war on the table.
