Christopher Nkunku can offer an extra Chelsea transfer boost after Champions League draw

Chelsea found out their UEFA Champions League last 16 fate on Monday morning as they were paired with Borussia Dortmund for the first time in the competition's history.

Within the same draw, Manchester City got another of three possible Bundesliga opponents in the form of RB Leipzig.

Narratively, Leipzig were one of the teams that would have added extra spice given the obvious connection to Timo Werner, who only departed this past summer, but also transfer target Christopher Nkunku who could join the Blues in 2023.

Reports emerged last month of Chelsea's serious interest in the French attacker, who already has 16 goals this season.

Nkunku could give Chelsea an extra boost in the Champions League by helping to knock out a Premier League rival in Manchester City, should Graham Potter's side progress past Dortmund in the new year.

The 24-year-old notably scored a hat-trick the last time he visited the Etihad Stadium in September of 2021 as City beat Leipzig in a 6-3 goal-fest in a group game.

Nkunku netted three times in the group stage this year for Marco Rose's side as they finished behind Real Madrid in Group F, with Nkunku scoring in their 2-1 win over Los Blancos on matchday five.

Chelsea are expected to try and tie up the deal for Nkunku in January to try and get a jump on European rivals before his release clause is active next summer.
