Christmas movie favourite The Holiday is going to get a sequel

A modern Christmas classic is in line for a much-anticipated sequel some 17 years after the original arrived on our cinema screens. The Holiday has become a feel-good favourite over the years following its release in 2006, and fans have been eagerly awaiting news for a follow-up ever since.

Starring Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jack Black and Jude Law, the rom-com did decent business at the box office (over £200million from a £70m budget) but its legend has grown over the years with many families sitting down to watch it every Christmas. Hollywood seems now to have woken up to the fact of the film's enduring popularity.

Cameron, 50, Kate, 47, Jude, 49, and Jack, 53, have all reportedly signed up to start filming the film's sequel next year – a source has claimed.

The insider told The Sun: "The plan is to start rolling on scenes next year, primarily in the U.K. and in Europe, but the main talent are all signed up and on board. It’s one of the most successful movies of its kind and still enjoyed every year by millions of fans around the world – it makes perfect sense to revisit those characters and find out what became of their lives after they hooked up.

"It’ll be funny, poignant, and heartwarming – just what everyone wants for Christmas."

The Holiday sees two women swap homes during the festive period – with Iris (Winslet) staying in Amanda's (Diaz's) swanky Los Angeles pad while Amanda retreats to Iris' country escape. Both are looking for a change of pace to their lives after suffering bad breakups, but end up finding themselves falling in love in one another's worlds – with Amanda falling for Iris' brother Graham (Law) and Iris finding love with Amanda's colleague, Miles (Jack).

It comes after Cameron Diaz spilled on an iconic scene in the movie last year, reports The Mirror. Speaking to Vulture, the actress revealed the scene of her running through fields after changing her mind about spending New Year in the US wasn't in the script and took a week to shoot.

She explained: "They only used two shots, but we shot like ten shots of me running across ten different fields And we covered all the hillside with this fake snow, which was totally biodegradable. It was the most incredible — it doesn’t snow in England. It rains in England. But there are swabs of snow."

She added how the music used in the scene was "blasting" as she filmed the moment. Cameron added: "Literally, I was so fit by the end of that week. I ran probably seven miles a day in those heels. Through mud and hills. It was so hilarious. I was literally like, 'I’m not even complaining right now because my job is to run, and I’m okay with that'. But I’m sweating."
