It's considered a gesture of goodwill and thanks at Christmas time to give a gift to those who help us throughout the year.
Some of the people the Irish population like to thank include their milkman, binman and for many the postman. But not everyone is impressed by the kind gestures by people who are paid to carry out the job.
As the cost of living crisis hits homes hard across the country, many are forced to find ways to cut spending and this can often include the likes of gifts for those outside the immediate family. One woman took to social media to ask how much she should give her postman this year, asking: "Is €30 enough to put in the card for the postman?"

A postman replied: "I'll be honest, I would be jumping for joy if I got €30 in a card. €30 is a good chunk of change, but if you feel that he or she is worth it, then go for it." And while the gesture may seem a rare one, it appears that it's more common than we realise.
One Twitter user replied: "I always give a few quid to our lovely post man at Christmas. We have been blessed with all wonderful postmen over the years." Another added: "I didn’t feel over generous putting in 20 euros (and a bar of posh chocolate). Postmen are wonderful!"
It seems that some think the public should go even further to show their thanks. One man responded: "30 not enough. 50 good sum the man is at your door wind and rain or sunshine." While another said: "[€30] is more than enough, you don't have to."
Another cheekily replied: "I thought they were paid by an post?" A third said: "A tip is a bit over the top for doing the basic requirement of your job [in my opinion]."
And a fourth said that if you tip one service provider, you should also tip others, writing: "How much did you put in the card for the girl on the till at your local supermarket?"
