Christmas Fair Organizer Assassinated At Southern Mexico Event

Evelyn Salgado

Authorities in southern Mexico have reported a tragic incident at a Christmas fair in the state capital of Chilpancingo. The organizer of the annual Christmas and New Year's fair, Martín Ramírez Ruíz, was assassinated during the holiday event. The Governor of Guerrero, Evelyn Salgado, condemned the killing as an unacceptable act that will not go unpunished. State prosecutors are currently investigating the crime to bring the perpetrators to justice.

While the motive behind the assassination remains unclear, it is known that criminal gangs in the region often extort money from local businesses and resort to violence against those who refuse to comply. The gunmen targeted Ramírez Ruíz directly, resulting in his tragic death. Another individual was also killed in the attack, with a third person sustaining injuries.

Ramírez Ruíz was the head of a civic group that has organized an arts, food, and handicrafts fair in Chilpancingo for nearly two centuries. The fair, which runs from Christmas to Jan. 7, also pays tribute to the local patron saint, St. Matthew. However, the city has been plagued by violence due to the ongoing turf war between rival drug gangs, the Tlacos and the Ardillos.

Recent incidents of violence in Chilpancingo include the grisly decapitation of the city's mayor and the killing of 11 market vendors, including four boys, by one of the gangs. The mayor's body was found with his severed head placed on a vehicle, while the vendors' bodies were discovered dumped in a pickup truck. The city's residents have been living in fear as gang-related violence escalates.

Chilpancingo, with a population of about 300,000, has been deeply affected by gang dominance, leading to extreme measures such as gang-led demonstrations, highway blockades, and hostage situations. The situation has prompted intervention efforts, including truce negotiations facilitated by Roman Catholic bishops between warring drug cartels in the region.

The ongoing violence in Guerrero underscores the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to address the root causes of gang-related crime and restore peace and security to the affected communities.
