Christmas Day 2023 could be 'hottest ever,' Met Office says

Weather forecasters have not ruled out Monday being the hottest Christmas Day on record.

The Met Office has said there is a “small chance” that somewhere in the UK it might be warmer than the 15.6C it was on December 25, 1920.

Only the Scottish mountains might see snow - although that is enough for the weather agency to declare it a white Christmas

Meteorologist Liam Eslick said it is unlikely that England will see any snow and that there will be highs of 14-15C for most of the country.

“It's looking like a damp picture across the UK, heavy rain possibly in Wales. Past Christmas lunch there could be some breaks if people are looking to go out and about,” he told Sky.

"Boxing Day is probably going to be the best day if people are looking to go for a walk."

“There is a small chance,” of it being the hottest Christmas Day on record, he added.

The Met Office has previously predicted snow for parts of the UK, although the agency said that it would be “far from perfect”.

London will likely see a damp and miserly Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with the sun set to shine on Boxing Day.

There could also be further winds and heavy showers, giving potential for more transport chaos after the torrid week some have experienced thus far.

Yellow weather warnings are in place for Christmas Eve with winds of up to 70mph set to strike parts of the UK.

“People should make sure to leave more time, especially in exposed areas, [as the weather] could affect rail networks and ferries,” Mr Eslick said.

"People travelling on roads should take care and stay away from high-sided vehicles and, for people who are at home and are going for walks, stay away from coasts."
