Christmas cheer is guaranteed for one North Lanarkshire village as it gets ready to switch on its festive lights.
This year’s Christmas lights event in Newmains has been confirmed for Sunday, November 13, with the big switch-on taking place at around 4pm.
As with last year, local firm Jordan Electrics have donated a considerable amount for this year’s lights while members of Newmains & District Community Council have been fundraising throughout the year.
Newmains councillor Robert John McKendrick said: “This year you are looking at a cost of £10,000 for the Christmas lights and the tree especially when you consider the rise in energy prices.
“We are in the fortunate position to have had such great backing from Jordan Electrics and our community council have been fantastic.
“It’s sad that it has to come to this but everyone has got behind the fundraising.
“The lights switch-on is always a big event in our calendar so we are hoping it’s going to be another great day.”
Councillor McKendrick added: “North Lanarkshire Council currently provides funding for lights in our towns like Wishaw, Shotts, Motherwell, and so on, while villages like Newmains, Cleland, Cambusnethan, and Coltness all have to raise money within their community groups if they want their lights. Is this a fair system?
“Does a child living in a village deserve the same from North Lanarkshire Council as a child living in a town?”
Before the big switch-on, the St Brigid’s Centre is sure to be packed with plenty of Christmas stalls and activities for the kids.
Mary Gilfillan, from Newmains Gala Committee, said: “We will have a whole host of stalls and a tearoom open.
“There will be arts and crafts, Christmas stalls, face painting for the kids and much more.”
The activities at St Brigid’s Centre start at 1.30pm on Sunday, November 13.
