Christian Kirk thinks the Jaguars could lead the NFL in scoring

In the nearly three decades since the Jacksonville Jaguars played their first games, the team has never led the NFL in scoring. The closest it came was in its third season when the Jaguars finished with the third most points in the 1997 season.

Could 2023 be the year that Jacksonville finally finishes No. 1?

“Most definitely,” Jaguars receiver Christian Kirk told reporters Tuesday. “I think that’s the goal. We step on this field to be the best offense in the league and that’s our mindset.

“We know how good we can be, and we know how good we are. When you come out here and don’t show it, it can get really frustrating for guys that are trying to play at a high level. We all just hold each other to our standard and make sure we’re bringing guys with us if they’re having a lackluster day or whatnot for lack of better terms.”

Kirk was one of several free agents signed by the Jaguars during the 2022 offseason. He lived up to his pricy contract by finishing his first season in Jacksonville with 84 receptions, 1,108 receiving yards, and eight touchdowns — all career highs.

This season the wide receiving corps will add Calvin Ridley, a former Atlanta Falcons first-round pick who was acquired via trade in November 2022.

“He’s been great, just his intensity, how he’s approached every day, the extra effort and time he puts into his craft and taking care of his body,” Kirk said of Ridley. “Everybody has seen the way he approaches practice and the way he competes. It just brings up the level of competition in our room and our standard.”

The Jaguars finished the 2022 season with the 10th most points and total yards.
