Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says Christian Eriksen could return for Wednesday’s Premier League clash with Tottenham.

The midfielder has been a key part of the Dutchman’s rebuild so far, starting all eight League games for which he has been available after joining on a free transfer from Brentford.

Spurs boss Antonio Conte has hinted he would like to work with the playmaker again, having coached him during Inter Milan’s Serie A-winning season of 2020/21 following his move from north London.

Eriksen, however, has signed a three-year contract at Old Trafford and already looks a crucial component of the team.

The Dane has been suffering with illness of late and missed Sunday’s draw with Newcastle but has an outside chance of appearing against his former club.

"Christian Eriksen returned in the team training today and we have to see how that works out, how he will recover, if he has tomorrow the energy so we have to wait for that,” said ten Hag at Friday’s pre-match press conference.

United, meanwhile, have been charged by the FA for failing to control their players during the draw with Newcastle.

United players surrounded referee Craig Pawson after he disallowed a goal by Cristiano Ronaldo, with the Portuguese claiming Newcastle had taken a free kick before he raced to take the ball away from goalkeeper Nick Pope and slotted it into an empty net.

"Manchester United FC has been charged with a breach of FA rule E20.1 following its Premier League game against Newcastle United FC on Sunday," the FA said in a statement.

"It’s alleged that Manchester United FC failed to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion during the 49th minute of this match, and the club has until Thursday to respond."
