Chris Wood has already pledged future to Newcastle despite fresh interest from Nottingham Forest

Chris Wood would prefer to stay at Newcastle United and fight for his place - but there is interest from both Nottingham Forest and Leeds for a loan deal until the end of the season.

For that to happen, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe would need to see that he has enough firepower in his frontline to see United through until the end of the season. And bearing in mind that Alexander Isak has only just returned and Callum Wilson has suffered with illness recently, the Magpies are not exactly flourishing with strikers if injuries cut into the squad.

Yet Forest's interest - as reported in the Times - is clear as they look to pull away from the danger zone.

Wood made it clear only in December that he was happy to fight for his place at St James' Park - even if there are no guarantees he is first choice. It is also just one year since he signed for £25million from Burnley to spearhead the club's bid for survival.

Wood currently has 18 months left on his current deal and spoke about staying at the club in this window back in December during the club's media day in Saudi Arabia.

When asked about staying until the end of the contract he signed just last year, Wood told Chronicle Live back then: "100% - especially with the way the clubs is going, I'd love to be here long-term. Or even longer than that.

"I still believe I have a big part to play here. I have not shown my best football here yet but hopefully I can do that given the chance. If not I am here to support the club and push them in the right direction. I am committed here and want to be here."
