Chris Tarrant still haunted by Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? presenting stint

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? star Chris Tarrant said the show's catchphrases still haunt him to this day.

The 75-year-old stepped down as host in 2014 but fans still won't let him forget his time on the show, the Daily Star reports.

The dad-of-four said he hears the show's slogans every day, including from people in the streets shouting at him "Hello, CT. Do you want to phone a friend?" or saying "Go 50:50".

On one occasion, while at the pub, the landlord even poured Chris' drink down the sink and told him: "We don't want to give you that!"

The quiz show king and former Tiswas presenter said he takes the jibes as a compliment, as it shows people still think of his time fronting the popular series.

"It's just over 20 years since I could last walk down the street anywhere in Britain without somebody shouting at me, 'Hello, CT. Do you want to phone a friend?'," he said.

"Bearing in mind I haven't even done the show for years, it still happens every single day.

"It's never been a problem, people are just saying they like the show.

"Phrases like 'Phone a friend', 'We don't want to give you that', 'Ask the audience' and 'Go 50: 50'' have become a part of world parlance."

In his new book It's Not a Proper Job, Chris says how his catchphrases have even been repeated in Parliament by Tony Blair and Boris Johnson.

Elsewhere in his memoir, Chris also revealed that he spent the first 10 years of his television career 'drunk'.

In 2018 he was fined £6,000 and banned from driving for a year after being charged with drink-driving.

He later told The Mirror that he had "learned his lesson".

Chris has also recently taken in three Ukrainian refugees and said he will offer them a home for as long as they need it.
