Chris Sutton has labelled VAR a 'circus' that will continue to spiral on - with the Celtic legend also branding the referees in the SPFL as 'amateur' after another week of dubious decisions.
Celtic have asked for clarity on the controversial decision to rule Jota offside in their tie against Motherwell in midweek after the Portugal star's goal against Stevie Hammell's men was ruled out in contentious circumstances. Fortunately for the Hoops, the strike didn't matter for much as they came away with a 2-1 win at Fir Park.
Yet with decisions in other games also flooding the Scottish Premiership with multiple talking points, Celtic icon Sutton has refused to give the newfound technology any sparkling reviews. Sutton has now ventured on another tirade by calling VAR 'a circus', 'utter chaos' and that the amateur tag he's bestowed upon whistlers should not be seens a slap in the face for the current group of officials.
Sutton jibed on BT Sport's Scottish Football Extra: "I've not had a problem with Scottish referees throughout my playing days into my media career, I've always backed the referee in Scotland! I don't moan about them.
"I have an issue with VAR. I'm not surprised. This should've waited until the end of the season if there were teething problems to make sure everything was right. Starting halfway through the season was absolutely bonkers.
"I'm not surprised that they're getting a lot of things wrong. I think the point a lot of managers are making is that VAR is allowing referees to re-referee the game and that isn't what it was brought in for. There are so many issues. Ian Maxwell said it would be utter chaos - and he was right. Scottish referees are amateurs, and this isn't a slap in the face for them.
"They are amateurs, this is a professional game and they haven't been up to it, they aren't up to it and this is going to carry on, the circus is going to carry on."
