Chris Sutton doubts Todd Cantwell's Rangers credentials as he levels 'thin skinned and touchy' accusation

Chris Sutton has described new Rangers signing Todd Cantwell as “thin skinned” and “touchy” as he shared concerns over whether he’s cut out for the Old Firm goldfish bowl.

The former Norwich City midfielder joined Rangers on a long-term deal this week, becoming Michael Beale’s first signing as Ibrox boss. Sutton paid close attention as Cantwell broke into the first team at his formative club Norwich, but the midfielder has lost his way since.

Sutton insists there’s a seriously talented player in there and says that Cantwell has shown that before. But he’s unsure whether the 24-year-old has the mental strength to cope with the demands of playing for the Light Blues in the pressurised environment that is Glasgow and competing with Celtic for trophies. And Sutton couldn't resist a dig, wishing Cantwell well across the city and hopes that he can achieve a top half finish and make a semi-final or two.

He told Scottish Football Extra: “I think he backs himself.

“I think he’s shown he’s a really talented player, but that was a couple of seasons ago. There is a huge talent in there and it’s up to Michael Beale to get that out of him.

“My issue with Todd is I think he’s a little bit thin skinned, I really do. I think he’s touchy with things and you can’t be that in the Glasgow environment.

“He has to hit the ground running. It’s all about attitude with him but there’s certainly a player in there.

“I wish him well and I hope Rangers finish in the top half and get to cup semi-finals with him in the team.”
