Chris Sutton and Kevin Thomson in on air row over Kemar Roofe Rangers red card verdict

Fuming Chris Sutton reckons Rangers striker Kemar Roofe should have been shown a straight red card for a challenge on Daizen Maeda.

The Celtic forward was chopped down as he looked to hit Gio van Bronckhorst's men on the counter attack during their crucial Scottish Cup showdown.

Roofe was shown a yellow card for the challenge, but Sutton Immediately declared the punishment should have been more severe.

However, former Ibrox midfielder Kevin Thomson was quick to defend referee Bobby Madden.

The Kelty Hearts boss started the debated on Premier Sports stating: "That's a shocker really, I don't like to see that."

Sutton chimed in: "I'll tell you, that's a red card."

Former Rangers favourite Thomson continued: "I'm not so sure that's a red..."

However, Sutton interrupted: "Where has he caught him?"

Thomson went on: "It's just a yellow card. It's just a professional foul, Chris. He has just taken one for the team, it ain't malicious. He has just taken one for the team and clipped his ankle."

Sutton doubled down: "He clipped his heel on his shin."

When it was put to Sutton by lead commentator Rory Hamilton that Bobby Madden had to consider if there was an intent to go for the ball, he continued: "We have seen the pictures."

Thomson quipped: "He's not trying to play the ball, Rory. It's a professional foul. Maeda is driving away."
