Chris Rock refuses to comment on Will Smith slap during surprise set in New York

Chris Rock once again refused to address the infamous Oscars slap saga during a surprise comedy set in New York City on Tuesday night.

The comedian, 57, told the audience at the iconic Comedy Cellar to "lower their expectations" ahead of getting into his routine - dashing hopes of some new material centering around the much-talked about moment.

It's been over a week since Will Smith stormed the stage at the Oscars and took a swipe at the comic, following the stand-up making the actor's wife Jada Pinkett Smith the butt of a joke ahead of presenting the award for Best Documentary.

Since then, a slew of celebrities have rushed to offer their take on the shocking altercation - with The Fresh Prince of Bel Air star apologising and resigning from The Academy - but Chris has maintained his silence on the matter.

Dropping in for his surprise set at the Comedy Cellar on Tuesday, the Madagascar voice actor received a warm welcome from the excited audience.

According to Page Six, within seconds of appearing on stage, the legendary stand-up told the crowd: "Lower your expectations, I'm not going to address that s***."

A source also claimed that Chris joked about the new interest in his comedy shows where he workshops new material - joking that "all of a sudden people cared about his early shows."

The Grown Ups actor's reluctance to address the Academy Awards incident just comes days after he stopped fans jeering Will during another comedy set last week.

As Chris performed in Boston on Thursday night - just days after the Oscars - a fan tried to show their support for the comic, yelling to the star: "F**k Will Smith!"

According to People, the stand-up comedian quickly shut the verbal attack down - replying: "No, no, no, no, no..."

Chris may not be ready to discuss the assault, but the star's brother has been keen to offer his opinion on the matter - stating he would like to see the actor's Best Actor honour revoked by The Academy.

"Every time I’m watching the videos, it’s like a rendition that just keeps going over and over in my head," Kenny Rock told the Los Angeles Times earlier this week.

"My brother was no threat to him and you just had no respect for him at that moment. You just belittled him in front of millions of people that watch the show."

Shortly after slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars, Will was back on stage to collect his Best Actor award for his role in the Venus and Serena Williams biopic, King Richard.

In a tearful speech, the dad-of-three apologised for his actions - but not to Chris - and claimed 'love made him do it'.

The Tuesday following the ceremony, the Men In Black directly apologised to Chris in a lengthy statement shared across social media.

"Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally," Will explained, referring to the comedian's G.I Jane gag and his wife's alopecia condition.

"I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness," he added, going on to sign off saying he is a "work in progress".
