Chris Pine's Directorial Debut 'Poolman' Receives Mixed Reviews

Chris Pine's directorial debut film Poolman premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.

Chris Pine, known for his roles in popular films such as Wonder Woman and The Princess Diaries, recently made his directorial debut with the film Poolman. Premiering at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, Poolman follows the story of pool cleaner Darren, played by Pine, who uncovers a conspiracy and embarks on a mission to protect Los Angeles.

Despite featuring a talented cast including Annette Bening, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Danny DeVito, and DeWanda Wise, the film received a lukewarm reception from critics. With a 23% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Poolman stands as one of the lowest-rated films in Pine's career.

DeWanda Wise, who stars in the film, expressed her admiration for Pine's directorial skills and the genre of film noir that the movie explores. She praised Pine's attention to detail and emotional depth in directing the cast, emphasizing her pride in being part of the project.

Wise defended the film's unique style and Pine's unconventional appearance in Poolman, suggesting that audiences may have struggled with seeing Pine in a less traditionally attractive role. Despite the mixed reviews, Wise remains enthusiastic about the film and looks forward to audiences experiencing its quirky and fun nature.

Alongside his role as director, Pine also wrote and produced Poolman. While there is no official announcement regarding Pine's next directorial venture, fans are eagerly anticipating his return as Captain James T. Kirk in a potential Star Trek: Beyond sequel.

DeWanda Wise, who stars in Poolman, is set to appear in the upcoming Blumhouse horror film Imaginary, where she plays a character who discovers her childhood imaginary friend is real and vengeful. Directed by Jeff Wadlow, Imaginary is scheduled for release on March 8.

Additionally, Wise is slated to star in Killing Faith, a supernatural thriller set in 1859. The film follows the journey of a freed slave who believes her daughter is possessed and seeks the help of a widowed physician to find a distant faith healer.
